Black Swamp Conservancy The Black Swamp Conservancy, a land trust, is a regional, non-profit organization established to directly support the conservation of land and water resources in northwest Ohio. Their supporters are people who want to preserve the integrity of their communities as they continue to grow. Proper community planning to protect native habitats, agricultural areas, and scenic views will help to enhance the quality of living today and forever. BSC is one of over 1,500 land trusts across the United States dedicated to conserving land through private action. We engage in no zoning or regulatory matters, nor do we lobby for political reasons. The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Their mission is to preserve, interpret and educate the community and visitors on the rich history of the Lake Erie Islands. Founded in 1975 as the Put-in-Bay Centennial Committee, this organization was renamed the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society in 1985 when a group of dedicated island residents formed to make their vision of an island museum a reality. The first museum was opened the the historical Put-in-Bay Bottling Works building in 1987. A new 6000 square foot main building was opened in 1998. The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society welcomes all ages to explore the varied history of the beautiful islands of Lake Erie's Western Basin through the many displays. Providing a range of activities from children's programs to four weeks of Elderhostel each year, the Society also hosts seasonal events, tours and lectures. Open daily through the summer, weekends in both spring and fall and by appointment the rest of the year, the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society museum also houses a research library and archives. Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church In 1875, Martin Barsch donated land for a new church on what is now Put-In-Bay Road. The site was approximately 1500 feet west of the corner of Thompson Road. Construction of the new church was begun in 1875 but was soon stopped due to lack of money. The bad depression which begun in 1873 had finally hit Put-In-Bay. The church was actually completed eight years later in 1883. It was a board and batten Gothic structure, very typical of country churches of its time. Perry Group Perry group is a non-profit 501(3)C organization that supports educational and cultural programs at Perry's Victory. Among the events supported by the Perry Group are the Firelands Symphony and the Toledo Symphony orchestras. Firelands will perform on July 2 at 7 p.m. as part of the July 4 program and the Toledo Symphony will perform on Saturday, September 11 at 6 p.m., as part of Historical Weekend activities at the memorial. The Perry Group, also known as The Friends of Perry's Victory, was also instrumental in raising more than $125,000 to produce the free War of 1812/Battle of Lake Erie movie for visitors and to help defray the cost of some of the displays at the visitor center. The Perry Group has also helped sponsor several visits by the Brig Niagara during Historical Weekend and helped organize the Historical Weekend event which includes an 1812 Living History Military encampment, the performance by the Toledo Symphony and Art in the Park. Put-in-Bay Arts Council The Arts Council has hosted and performed numerous plays including a recent children's production entitled "THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER". The kids and students who participate have so much fun it is definitely a worthwhile venture. The Put-in-Bay school on South Bass Island has no theatre programming. So the Put-in-Bay Arts Council has a huge responsibility to the children of this island community. Put-in-Bay Garden Club The Put-in-Bay Garden Club is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization of local gardeners, volunteers, and interested community members dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the natural beauty of South Bass Island. Recognizing the uniqueness of Put-in-Bay, the PIB Garden Club raises funds to maintain green areas on the island for residents and visitors, educates people regarding the value of sustaining natural plant life, and promotes opportunities to work with volunteers, residents and community members to ensure its natural beauty for generations to come. Put-in-Bay Recreational Committee Sponsor of many local programs including the Nature Camp Programs presented by the Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy which are a three week multi-age day camp experience. Nature Camp is always a big success, teaching over 100 kids about our unique island environment. Actuicities include Preschool Nature Camp with stories, games and crafts about birds, dragonflies, and leaves; Nature Camp for the younger children on both Middle Bass and South Bass with programs on Bees, Bats, and Bubbles; and a joint lunch with both morning and afternoon sessions which are enjoyed by all. Put-In-Bay Senior Center Located at 195 Concord Ave, the Senior Center is home to events for islanders of all ages from the young kids' 4H sales to senior lunches. Lunch is served at noon Thursdays and reservations are due by noon the day prior. Suggested donation is $3 for lunch. A quick sample of weekly events includes... St. Paul's Episcopal Church Located at 623 Catawba Avenue with the Rev. Mary L. Staley, serving as Priest-in-Charge, St. Paul's offers tours of the church.St. Paul's congregation was established in 1864 and built the first island church in 1865. The islanders raised funds to build the church from 1863-1865. Jay Cooke purchased the land for the church from Jose De Rivera for ten dollars in 1865 and also contributed to the building fund.
